Journal of Business Women in Leadership Event June 5



The Spokane Journal of Business is presenting the 2019 Women in Leadership event on Wednesday, June 5 at Hemmingson Center, Gonzaga University. The event will include a community discussion about how to increase the number of women in corporate leadership, overcome gender obstacles, and shape healthier business environments. This year, the focus will be on the important topic of mentoring and sponsorship. There will be panelist discussion with area leaders:

YWCA Spokane calls for 2019 Women of Achievement Nominations



YWCA Spokane is calling for nominations for its 2019 Women of Achievement Awards. The deadline for submissions is Friday, June 21. For 37 years at this annual luncheon, YWCA Spokane has celebrated successful women in the community for their achievements along with their commitment to giving back to the Spokane community.

This year, the awards luncheon will be held at the Spokane Convention Center, 334 W Spokane Falls Blvd, on Friday, October 11. Established with the goal of increasing community awareness and appreciation for the diverse contributions of women leaders in Spokane, YWCA Spokane has honored more than 240 amazing women in the region at this luncheon over the years.

Winston & Cashatt hires new Associate Attorney Catherine Kardong



Catherine focuses her practice on elder law, estate planning, and probate. This includes a wide array of issues including guardianships, Medicaid planning, wills and trusts, benefits appeals and probate matters. Catherine graduated first in her class from Gonzaga University School of Law and began her legal career at the Washington State Supreme Court, where she clerked for Washington Supreme Court Justice Mary E. Fairhurst. She was then selected as an honors candidate at the Washington State Attorney General's Office and spent two years in Olympia representing areas within the Department of Social and Health Services that serve the aging and disabled populations of Washington.

She relocated to Spokane and continued on with the Attorney General's Office and began representing various institutions of higher education, most recently acting as lead counsel for Eastern Washington University.


Providence leaders recognized for contributions to rural health

The Washington Rural Health Association (WRHA) recently honored Providence Health Care leaders Ron Rehn, DHA, MPA, CMPE, and Denny Lordan, Jr., for their contributions to rural health. The Association recognized these local leaders as helping meet WRHA’s mission to collaboratively strengthen and improve the health of rural communities.

Ron Rehn, chief administrative officer, Providence Health Care-Stevens County Ministry, received the Leah Layne Memorial Health Leadership Award. This award is based on demonstrated leadership skills; someone who best exemplifies Layne's spirit, vision, foresight and dedication in the field of rural health. The award honors the late Leah Layne, a long-time campaigner and activist on behalf of rural health.

Denny Lordan, coordinator, Telehealth Program for Providence Health Care, received the Outstanding Contribution to Rural Health Award. His award is for nominees who have, over the course of their careers, made significant impacts in rural health across the state.


Wanderlust Delicato plans June opening

Around mid June we'll all be saying 'cheese' in downtown Spokane as Wanderlust Delicato opens at 421 W. Main. It will be a retail store and a dine-in restaurant offering a vast selection of wine, artisan cheeses, fresh charcuterie, and other menu items. You can pick up a party platter anytime and custom platters with 24-hour advance notice. Plus, Wanderlust Delicato will host cooking classes in their residential style kitchen space, taught by chefs, farmers and other experts.

Spokane Valley Red Robin receives honor

Another big honor for our community, and there have been a lot lately. Spokane Valley's Red Robin Gourmet Burgers and Brews at the Valley Mall has been named the busiest Red Robin in the country. Last year they served a weekly average of 8,300 customers and sold 5,000 pounds of french fries...that's every week! And that trend is continuing this year as well. Yummmm is right!

Spokane Sports named Sports Commission of the Year

Spokane is being honored with a national award for the organization's efforts to grow sports in the Spokane region. The National Association of Sports Commissions (NASC) has selected Spokane Sports as 'Sports Commission of the Year, Population Under 500,000'.

Award winners were announced at the 27th Annual NASC Sports Event Symposium in Knoxville, TN, on May 8, during the live awards event. Spokane Sports, along with top sports tourism organizations from across the country were recognized in a variety of categories - highlighting those who do outstanding work to grow sports and making their community a sports destination. Spokane Sports stood above the competition by hosting or servicing more than 58 sports events in 2018, including thirteen national events and two international events. These resulted in an impressive 46,000 visiting athletes, 59,000 hotel room nights and an immediate economic impact of $58.7 Million.

NACo Western Interstate Region Conference this week at the Davenport Grand

The National Association of Counties 2019 Western Interstate Region (WIR) Conference brings together county officials from across the nation to focus on pressing issues facing counties and their residents. This year's conference will be at the Davenport Grand Hotel, this Wednesday, May 15 through Friday, May 17, and will provide attendees with the opportunity to interact with federal, state and regional policymakers, participate in educational sessions and take home tools to address challenges.

Featured speakers are: Hon. James Hubbard, Undersecretary for Natural Resources and Environment, U.S. Dept. of Agriculture; Hon. Kim Wyman, Secretary of State, State of Washington; and Jim Ogsbury, Executive Director, Western Governors Association.
